glorious day

what a nice day -- should have worn shorts. thanks to norris and co, i now have a garden to sit in, which will be very pleasant this summer.

not much happening today -- we're going down the boozer later to watch the match, and then probably have a few cool beers this evening...

see you later

farewell, /.

i won't be reading slashdot again. they made the mistake of making fun of my beloved home country. somehow these geeks think the word 'cornwall' and 'lizard peninsula' is funny. these so-called geeks have also never heard of goonhilly (something they also find amusing). learn some geography. learn some history. damn geeks.

important FR related point

note that the lighthouse in Fraggle Rock was actually a real place: St Anthony lighthouse in my fair country of Kernow.

down at fraggle rock...

me and john were just thinking about the rude song to the fraggle rock theme tune, and decided to look up the show on our favourite open source information source, wikipedia. read this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraggle_Rock -- it is excellent and very informative.

also, here is a pic:

memory i thought i'd share with you

i remember when i was at university, in the toilets of the physics department there was someone who graffittied(spelling?). anyway, they were unusual in that they confined the graffiti to the grouting between the tiles in the shitters. my favourite two lines were:

"more graffiti should be confined to grouting"

and

"more physics should be confined to grouting"

this was great, because it didn't make the place unsightly, and was amusing at the same time. if you're ever there go take a look in the first cubicle in the toilet by the lifts on the ground floor.

note -- some joker had written on the bog-roll dispenser:

"physics degrees: help yourself"

with an arrow pointing down. oh, how i laughed every time i took a dump in that place.

damn, i'm sweaty

been packing up my stuff today for the move to chez-norris. damn, i've got one helluva stuff. didn't realise it.

trooped into work to sort out a few things. the weather is very close, and i'm pretty sweaty. i just informed john of this fact -- i think he regarded that snippet as too much info.

glad to see npr's research blog is up and running again, though i'm sorry about his luggage. it's been quite on the other blogs for a while. what's going on?

more later. i'll let you know how the move goes.

real science, real taste. always the real thing.

ok, so me and john conducted a scientific experiment at lunchtime comparing the taste of the new coke zero and normal diet coke. apparently coke zero has more of a different artificial sweetner than diet coke, and zero calories. the question: could we tell the difference? it's meant to taste more like normal coke. we'll see..

first, we enlisted norris to play the part of the egg-head scientist, and do the pouring. we got two pairs of standard plastic cups, marked with the numbers '1' and '2'. norris then marked the corresponding can either 1 or 2, and poured the correct fluid into each cup. he had control over this stage, and we did not look. i claimed i could tell by the sound of the ring-pull the identity. this was, looking back, optimistic. my senses are highly tuned, but not to the level of acoustic detection of taste variation.

next, norris presented me and john with our cups. we first smelled the liquid, to see if we could tell the difference. again, having faith in my senses, i claimed that cup 2 held the diet. next, tasting, and i was convinced with my choice. further tastings however complicated things. each had the qualities of coke, with a very subtle variation. perhaps by this stage my palate was being compromised. i said that 1 was coke zero and 2 was the diet. john dissagreed vehemently. perhaps his taste was better than mine, for norris turned around the cans to reveal the correct numbers. john was correct. that ended the experiment.

for posterity, we recorded in the form of pictures the experiment:

i wondered if you had a copy of fly-fishing by j.r. hartely?

i enjoy fishing, but don't get the chance to go often. thank god for the wonderful age of technology we live in then, for i have a copy of the highly realistic 'fish sim' game. photo-realistic locations, and accurate rigs allow me to experience fishing on my computer. i'm going to bring it in to 311 and set it up on johns laptop... see what we can catch.

more soon.
